Hemp Kitty Litter: Importance & uses

Hemp kitty litter is a 100% pure hemp stalk. It is a renewable form of resource, which is biodegradable and compostable. It has no chemicals or additives with high absorbing features as compared to clay and pellets. The litter can even absorb the ammonia odour and can simply clean the litter box. However, before proceeding ahead, let us step by step discuss what is meant by hemp.

Hemp is a type of Cannabis Sativa, which is used for numerous reasons like clothing, CBD oils, biodegradable plastics, paint, rope, biofuel, etc. Note that the industrial hemp and marijuana both are types of Cannabis Sativa, which are way different from one another in composition and uses.

Both marijuana and hemp consist of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, a type of chemical that makes an individual extremely high. However, hemp has extremely little THC, which cannot make one high. Industrial hemp as per the United States Government should contain within 0.3% of THC. Note that this classification is mentioned in 2018’s Farm Bill.

History behind hemp in the US

For many years, the hemp plant was in cultivation in the US until the year 1937. With the Tax Act of Marihuana, American hemp linked factories and industries were destroyed. It incurred a tax on the individuals who performed the work of selling away cannabis.

During the second world war, the US military needed hemp for the uniforms, canvas and rope. The Navy needed to replace the jute crop with hemp, which they were not able to avail from the Philippines and Indonesia. Once World War 2 got over, all such industries disappeared.

Hemp legalization

As per the Farm bill of 2014, industries and state departments linked with agriculture were permitted to grow the industrial hemp. The bill required them to register with the concerned states and abide by all the state laws and only use hemp for research linked studies.

As per the Farm bill of 2018, the hemp farming act got reclassified where within a level of 0.3% of THC were permitted to be used. According to the farming act, hemp cultivation no longer was limited to universities & state departments. Moreover, this act gave the farmers the right to water, crop insurance, federal agricultural agent etc. Even hemp could now be transported across the state lines.

Hemp used for cat litter

Hemp stalks contain fibre that can be used for producing crumble litter or non clumping pellets. Stalks actually are nothing but the leftovers such as seeds and leaves, which are removed for numerous other products.

Note the hemp cat litter in nature is not clumping. They are absorbed easily at a faster rate as compared to pellets, about 7 times faster. Moreover, they contain nil additives or chemicals. The manufacturers claim that they may be a little dusty and have a slight odor.

Generally, reviewers prefer clumping and reveal that the hemp litter absorbs better than the non controlled odor products. It is even tough to interpret because one cannot expect the non clumping litter to clump up instantly. Controlling the odor depends on how frequently one cleans the box.

There are various factors like cat’s pee and poop, what they eat on a daily basis, their medical conditions, volume of pee etc which can be the reason for excessive odor. It might be a good litter for young kittens because of their non-clumping nature.

However, there are numerous kitty litter products, which come with superior odor control properties as they emit fresh and clean scent all the time. One such product is Oley Hemp Kitty Litter – Natural & Healthy Option by the brand Oley Hemp.
